A Few Energy Saving Tips

It is the time of the year we all want to save our energy dollars. Here are a few easy things we can do to make a difference on our utility bills:

1.  Replace light bulbs with an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
2.  Lower the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees. Reducing the temperature by 20 degrees can save up to $50/year.
3.  Use expanding foam (available in spray cans) to seal the gaps around pipes that connect to the house from the outside.
4.  Install a door sweep if there is a lage gap at the bottom of the exterior door.
5.  Close the heat vents and the doors in rooms that aren't be used during the winter.
6.  Shut fireplace dampers to prevent heated air from going up the chimney when not in use. Be sure all embers are out.
7.  Clean registers, baseboard heaters and radiators. Be sure that they are not blocked by curtains, furniture or carpeting.
8.  Replace or clean furnace air filters. A clogged dirty filter forces your furnace to work harder. A clean filter can save you 10% on your bill.
